Below, you’ll find a list of  transportation options available to residents of Virginia’s Region 10 (City of Charlottesville and Counties of Albemarle, Nelson, Fluvanna, Louisa, and Greene).

 Jaunt provides 3 types of services:

1) Curb-to-curb demand-response service in the counties of Buckingham, Fluvanna, Louisa, Greene, Nelson, and rural Albemarle. This service requires prior reservation.

2) Fixed-route commuter service to UVA and downtown Charlottesville from Crozet, 29 North, Buckingham, and Lovingston. Reservations are not required to ride, just show up at the advertised stop and time.

3) ADA paratransit service in the City of Charlottesville and urban Albemarle. You must be pre-approved by a representative from CAT to use Jaunt’s ADA Paratransit Service.

  • Reservations are accepted Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. via phone (434) 296-3184 and email trips@ridejaunt.org.  Reservations are required at least 24-hours, or up to one week in advance.
  • Jaunt services are accessible for people with disabilities.

Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) is the public transportation system serving Charlottesville which provides fixed-route bus services to key town’s locations, including the University of Virginia, downtown Charlottesville, shopping centers, and residential neighborhoods.

  • CAT operates 12 routes (including Trolley) with varying schedules, including weekday, weekend, and holiday services
  • All CAT buses are accessible to people with disabilities and are wheelchair lift equipped

This service works similar to rideshare services like Uber or Lyft. When you’re ready to go, book a shared ride straight from your phone and get picked up in a sleek, comfortable vehicle.

Wheelchair accessible vehicles are available to riders with mobility needs.
The City of Charlottesville is currently not part of MicroCAT’s territory. However, people can travel to the 29 North area or Pantops and then use MicroCAT.

It is the primary public transportation network for the UVA Grounds, connecting academic buildings, residence halls, parking areas, and the medical center. provides transportation dedicated for students, faculty, The service is is open to the public.

Operated by UVA’s Department of Parking & Transportation, UTS offers a network of bus routes designed to connect key campus locations, including academic buildings, residence halls, medical facilities, and parking areas.
UTS services include:

  • Fixed-route buses: Operating on scheduled routes throughout the academic year, with reduced service during breaks and summer.
  • Safe Ride: A nighttime on-demand ride service for UVA community members traveling within university grounds.
  • Charter Services: Available for university-affiliated groups needing transportation for special events.
  • UTS buses are wheelchair accessible, and additional accommodations are provided for passengers with disabilities.

Afton Express connects Charlottesville with Staunton via Waynesboro and Fishersville over Afton Mountain.  Service offers free Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, and affordable pricing. Afton Express connects with BRITE, on the west side of Afton Mountain, and in Charlottesville with CAT to create an extensive network of transit routes and options in Virginia.

Check out BRITE’s and CAT’s routes ahead of time and enjoy a seamless transition between stops.

Cost: $3 (one way). For regular commuters, a cost savings fare card is available for $25 for a total of 10 rides. Fare cards may be purchased directly from the bus driver.

The Virginia Regional Transit (VRT) Foothills Express is a public transportation bus route connecting Culpeper, Madison, and Charlottesville, Virginia. Operates

Culpeper Station and the Charlottesville Downtown Transit Station

Virginia Breeze is an intercity bus service managed by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) designed to connect underserved rural areas and college towns with major cities, airports, and transportation hubs across the Commonwealth. 

The system  operates 5 bus routes spanning 1,450 miles with 36 stations, transporting approximately 60,000 annual riders.

Currently, two Virginia Breeze routes stop in Charlottesville:

  • Piedmont Express:  Danville-Altavista-Lynchburg-Amherst-Charlottesville-Culpeper-Warrenton-Gainesville-Dulles Airport-Washington D.C.
  • Tidewater Current: Harrisonburg-Staunton, Charlottesville-Richmond-Richmond Airport-New Kent-Williamsburg-Newport News-Norfolk-Virginia Beach

📍 Location: Virginia Breeze busses stop in Charlottesville at the bus shelters on Alderman Road at intersection of Floyd Drive. This is near the Lower West lot / Carl Smith Center by Scott Stadium.

Greyhound Lines is a long-distance intercity bus transportation service in the United States that provides affordable travel between cities and regions across the country. Founded in 1914, Greyhound operates an extensive network of bus routes connecting major metropolitan areas, small towns, and rural communities.

The service offers scheduled passenger transportation, package delivery services, and connections to other regional transit providers. Greyhound is widely used by travelers seeking a lower-cost alternative to air or rail travel and serves millions of passengers each year throughout North America.

Greyhound bus service in Charlottesville, VA, operates exclusively from Charlottesville Union Station, located at 810 W Main St, Charlottesville, VA 22903.  This is the only Greyhound bus stop in the city.

Charlottesville Union Station is not a ticket sales point.  Tickets must be purchased in advance through the following channels:

  • The free Greyhound mobile app
  • Authorized resellers

Amtrak is the United States’ national passenger rail service, providing intercity train transportation across much of the country. Amtrak operates a nationwide network that connects hundreds of cities and towns through long-distance, regional, and high-speed rail routes.

The service offers travelers an alternative to driving and flying, with amenities such as spacious seating, Wi-Fi on many routes, dining services, and sleeper accommodations on overnight trips. Amtrak plays an important role in connecting rural and urban communities while supporting accessible, energy-efficient, and convenient transportation throughout the United States.

Several Amtrak routes serve Charlottesville, including the Cardinal, Crescent, and Northeast Regional trains offering connections to major destinations including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, Chicago, and New Orleans.

Volunteer Driver Programs

Region 10 offers also other ways to travel beyond public transit services. One of the available options are Volunteer Driver Programs (VDP) which are community-based transportation services where volunteers use their own vehicles or program-provided vehicles to help individuals who have difficulty accessing transportation. These programs typically serve seniors, individuals with disabilities, low-income residents, or those living in rural areas with limited public transit options.

Currently, in Region 10 there are 2 senior communities offering organized volunteer driver services. These services are not open to the public. Person has to become a member of a such community to be given a ride by a volunteer driver.

Cville Village

Cville Village (CV) is a local non-profit organization which was formed to respond to the changing needs of elders, to support them in their homes, and to value their contributions. It’s purpose is to create and sustain a network of “neighbors helping neighbors.”.

One of the core activities (among many other) of CV is a Volunteer Driver Program offered to its members. In order to receive the rides person has to become a CV member.

  • Eligibility: adults 55 + years of age
  • Service area: people living in The City of Charlottesville + 1 mile from the City limits
  • Membership allows the member to request up to 3 rides (or other requests) per week

 Here to Stay Wintergreen

Here to Stay Wintergreen (HSW) is an organization very similar to Cville Village. Besides the assistance in daily chores, technical problems at home, socializing and other services,  HSW volunteers offer transportation help to the members allowing them to stay mobile and active. HSW owns also a small buss acquired with the help of PATH and Jaunt, which allows HSW to use it to meet transportation needs of its members.

  • Eligibility: no minimum age required
  • Service area: people living in Wintergreen Mountain and Stoney Creek, Nellysford area
