Beginning October 1, 2026, more older adults and people with disabilities in the Charlottesville region can receive transportation assistance when no other transportation option is available.
PATH received $50,000 from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) to expand its Transportation Assistance Fund (TAF).
Transportation can be a significant barrier to healthcare and other essential services, particularly in rural communities where public transportation is limited, and other transportation providers may not be available. PATH’s Transportation Assistance Fund serves as a safety net for people facing these situations.
The fund can help cover transportation costs after other options – including public transit, paratransit, volunteer driver programs, family support, and insurance-covered transportation – have been explored and found unavailable or unsuitable. The additional DRPT funding will significantly expand PATH’s ability to assist eligible residents throughout Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson.
Eligible applicants include adults age 65 and older and people with disabilities who meet income guidelines and do not have another suitable transportation option. PATH reviews each request individually to determine whether assistance is available and appropriate.

PATH encourages healthcare providers, social workers, case managers, local governments, aging and disability organizations, community organizations, caregivers, and other service providers to refer individuals who may be struggling to reach an important appointment because they lack transportation.

To be eligible to receive TAF assistance, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Is the person a resident of the city of Charlottesville or Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, or Nelson County?
- Is the individual 65+ years old or a person with a disability?
- Can the request be fulfilled using public transportation, Jaunt, or a volunteer driver?
- Does the person meet the income eligibility requirements below?
