On September 16th students in the special education program at Louisa County High School gained practical experience using public transportation during a hands-on travel training session organized by PATH in partnership with Jaunt.
The training introduced students to Jaunt’s transportation services and showed how public transit can help them reach jobs, medical appointments, shopping, and community activities.
Learning Through Practice
Students learned how to set up a Jaunt rider account, call and speak with a scheduler, and make a ride reservation. Practicing these steps helped students become more comfortable with the reservation process and build communication skills they can use when traveling independently.
Jaunt also provided a bus and driver for a practice ride. Students practiced boarding and exiting the vehicle safely, using seatbelts, and learned what to expect during a transit trip. The experience also encouraged students to talk about places they would like to visit independently in the future.
Building Independence
The session is part of the ongoing partnership between PATH and Jaunt to help students in Region 10 develop the skills and confidence needed for greater independence. PATH plans to continue offering travel training opportunities in Louisa County and throughout the region.
