Following successful travel training sessions with students at Fluvanna County High School and Louisa County High School, PATH is looking to expand the program and partner with more organizations throughout the region.
The trainings are designed to help participants develop the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence they need to use public transportation more independently. At Louisa County High School, for example, students learned about local transportation services, practiced creating rider accounts and making reservations, and participated in a practice bus ride provided in partnership with Jaunt. The hands-on approach allowed students to experience each step of using transit in a supportive environment.
The positive response to these sessions demonstrated the value of combining transportation education with real-world experience. For students preparing for adulthood, older adults who may no longer drive, people with disabilities, and others unfamiliar with public transit, learning how to navigate transportation can be an important step toward greater independence and community participation.
We’re Looking for Community Partners
PATH is now seeking special education school programs, senior centers, organizations serving people with disabilities, and other local partners interested in hosting travel training sessions.
Training can be tailored to the needs of each group and may include an introduction to available transportation services, trip planning, making reservations, safely boarding and exiting vehicles, and, when possible, hands-on experience using local transit.
Organizations interested in bringing travel training to their students, members, or clients are encouraged to contact PATH to discuss opportunities for a future session.
