Students in the special education program at Louisa County High School took an important step toward greater independence through a hands-on travel training session organized by the PATH, in collaboration with Jaunt.
The session was designed to introduce students to public transportation options in Louisa County and build the practical skills needed to use transit confidently and safely.
Learning by Doing
During the classroom portion of the training, students learned about Jaunt’s transportation services and discussed how public transit can help them get to work, medical appointments, shopping centers, and community activities in the future. A key highlight of the session was hands-on practice.
Students learned how to set up a Jaunt rider account, practiced calling Jaunt to speak with a scheduler, walked through the steps of making a ride reservation, reviewed what information they need to provide when booking a trip. This real-time phone practice gave students the opportunity to build communication skills and become more comfortable navigating the reservation process.
Practice Ride Builds Confidence
With Jaunt’s support, students were also able to experience public transit firsthand. Jaunt provided a bus and driver for a practice ride, allowing students to board the vehicle, secure seatbelts, and ride together as a group.
During the trip, students became familiar with: how to safely board and exit the vehicle, what to expect during a ride and basic transit etiquette and safety expectations.
The ride sparked conversations about future goals, with students sharing places they would like to visit independently once they feel ready to use public transportation on their own.
Partnership for Independence
The travel training session reflects ongoing collaboration between PATH and Jaunt to support students in the Region 10 as they transition toward adulthood.
By combining classroom instruction with real-world experience, the program helps young riders build the confidence and practical knowledge needed for independent travel. PATH plans to continue offering travel training sessions tailored to the needs of students in Louisa County and across the region.
Special thanks to Jaunt for coordinating and providing the practice bus ride, and to Louisa County High School’s teachers and staff for their continued partnership in preparing students for greater independence in their communities.
