New Virginia Breeze Route to Connect Charlottesville With the Coast by 2026

Charlottesville residents will soon have a new, affordable way to reach Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads region. The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) has announced a major expansion of the Virginia Breeze intercity bus network, confirming that the new Tidewater Current route will launch in Spring 2026 and will include a stop in Charlottesville.

DRPT has selected Academy Bus as the official operator of the new route, marking a significant milestone in expanding long-distance mobility options across the Commonwealth.

The Tidewater Current is one of the most significant expansions of the Virginia Breeze program to date,” said DRPT Director Tiffany Robinson. “This route will provide meaningful new travel opportunities for Virginians, and we look forward to bringing this service to communities across the Commonwealth.

A New East-West Connection for Central Virginia

For Charlottesville residents, the Tidewater Current represents a long-anticipated direct link to the coast. The east-west route will connect Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Newport News, Williamsburg, New Kent, Richmond International Airport, Richmond Main Street Station, Charlottesville, Staunton, and Harrisonburg.

This will give Central Virginia travelers – including college students, military families, state employees, and leisure travelers – a new, low-cost alternative to long car trips on I-64, especially during peak tourism season.

What’s Next?

The Tidewater Current is scheduled to begin service in Spring 2026, with schedules, fares, and final stop locations to be announced closer to launch. DRPT expects the route to complement other Virginia Breeze lines while enhancing statewide intercity travel.

For Charlottesville area, the announcement marks another step toward expanding equitable, statewide mobility, connecting the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Atlantic coast with a single ticket.
